New in Canberra?

Don’t worry – most students at ANU are from out of town. This guide is here to help you with the transition to life in this great city. Whether you want the best place for a night out, cheap take out, or something more cultured this guide is here to help you. Returning students: it is worth checking this guide out – you might find somewhere new!

A little bit about Canberra

Check out for the bottom line on Canberra.

As you probably know, Canberra is Australia’s capital. It is home to the ANU, the National Museum, the National Gallery, the National Library, and, of course, Parliament. However, it is unlike many other cities; designed around the concept of multiple mini city centres, you will find that Civic is often largely inhabited by students. This means that despite how small Canberra is, it remains an excellent student city. In fact, the OECD voted Canberra the best city in the world!

But what does this all mean for me, the student? It means that your University experience is uniquely placed; with so many national institutions situated around you, there are opportunities galore to experience the finer aspects of life. One can attend Question Time to explore politics, or visit the CSIRO if science appeals to you. This city offers endless opportunities just waiting to be taken advantage of.

Of course, when one needs a break from studies, Canberra is also filled with great restaurants, bars, clubs and other attractions. The rest of this guide details a number of great places, perfectly placed for the enjoyment of UniLodge residents.
