Why do I need to update?

To help prevent viruses and other malware, it is important to keep your operating system (OS) up to date. When your computer is pestering you to restart, it is for a reason!

Windows 8

1) Open up the start screen.
2) Type in “Windows update” without the quotes.
3) Click on “Check for updates”.
4) Click the “Check now” button, and install any available updates.

Windows 7/Vista

1) Open the start menu.
2) Open control panel.
3) Search for “Windows update”
4) Select “Check for updates” from the left-hand pane, and install any available updates.

Windows XP

Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows XP. As such, you should update to Windows 8. If you need advice on your options, log an IT Assistant request here.

Mac OSX Mountain Lion and later

1) Click the apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
2) Click “Software Update”. This will open the “software update” window.
3) Select all items to update. If prompted, enter your administrator username and password.

Mac OSX Lion and earlier

1) Click the apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
2) Click “Software Update”. This will open the App Store, and display a list of all available updates.
3) Click “Update all”. If prompted, enter your administrator username and password.
